Hum Honge Kaamyab!

NSS Special Camp, SNDT College of Arts & SCB College of Comm & Sc for Women, Mumbai
Adivasi Ashram Shala, Kaarav, Post Vangani, Taluka Ambernath, District Thane 21-27 December, 2011

The NSSNational Service Scheme  special camp, compulsorily a rural posting, can mean many things. For many volunteers it's just a home away from home, for others holiday at no expense, for others a welcome break from parental supervision and round the clock surveillance, a chance to experience true 'unadulterated' friendship, but for us teacher- organisers it was an attempt to open a window and facilitate a view to areas lying at the periphery of state largesse.
For volunteers unaccustomed to incessant load shedding or running water in toilets, to mention nothing of the punishing schedule, the challenges were daunting.
The camp 'feeling' enveloped even the most reluctant volunteers and eventually almost all the volunteers were won over by the 'camp spirit'-hard work, selfless service, commitment and team spirit. Volunteers planted saplings, interacted with students of the Ashram Shala, conducted a cultural nite for the villagers and paid a visit to the vilagers testing their newly acquired skills of 'first aid' and 'managing disaster situations' (the theme of the special camp)
They sure must have done something right! For the parting gift of the village Sarpanch, Shri Madan Kadav was a big box of gulab jamuns for the departing volunteers.
